CBSE Capacity Building Programme on Competency-Based Assessment

The Asian School, Dehradun successfully hosted a two-day CBSE Capacity Building Programme on Competency-Based Assessment (Secondary Level) on the 18th and 19th of July, 2025. The workshop, themed “The Art and Science of Creating Good Questions,” aimed to empower educators with the skills required to design effective, learner-centric assessments in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

A total of 60 educators attended the workshop, which was conducted by eminent educationists — Dr. Sarabjit Singh, Director of Bristol Public School, Dehradun and Dr. Sanjay Dewangan, Principal of The Wisdom Global School, Haridwar. With their vast experience and expertise, the resource persons guided participants through a deep exploration of assessment practices, offering valuable insights into competency-based learning and question design.

The sessions introduced teachers to Bloom’s Taxonomy and its application in creating questions that assess various cognitive domains — ranging from remembering and understanding to evaluating and creating. Educators engaged in collaborative discussions and group tasks, critically examining their existing assessment methods and learning how to structure multiple-choice and subjective questions that align with competency-based learning outcomes.

A significant portion of the workshop was devoted to the development of analytical and value-based questions, alongside the use of formative assessment tools, rubrics, and inclusive evaluation strategies. Teachers also practiced crafting open-ended and interdisciplinary questions that encourage students to think deeply and connect their learning across subjects.

In alignment with CBSE’s vision, the workshop reaffirmed the national shift towards conceptual clarity over rote learning and emphasized the idea of assessment as a tool for learning, not merely a means of grading. The programme concluded with a feedback session and a note of thanks from the organisers.
